Gastrodia Helps Huntington’s

Complementary Alternative Medicine (CAM) uses the herb Gastrodia to help the brain along. This herb is also known as Tian Ma in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). It is safe in low doses for young children and infants. It can be safely used with many other herbs. It is used in orthomolecular medicine with high doses of vitamins, minerals and nutritional supplements to treat very complex diseases.

Gastrodia can be used for treating Huntington’s disease. It has an anti-inflammatory effect which may be how it prevents seizures. Allow one to four weeks prior to adjusting the dosage of this herb in Huntington’s.

Huntington’s disease requires very high levels of vitamins and branched amino acids to support the overall health. An unrefined organic diet works best for this type of person. Use adequate levels of unsaturated fatty acids to facilitate recovery and treatment of any brain disease.

This herb is used to protect the brain and keep brain cells from dying. It enhances the mitochondria’s ability to produce energy. It has a sedative effect. Gastrodia lowers blood pressure and can be used to treat hypertensive headaches. It is also able to treat migraine headaches. The herb is safe to use as a preventative for those experiencing several migraine headaches during one week.

Gastrodia protects the brain from seizures and convulsions. This herb can be taken by those suffering from non-defined seizures and some types of epilepsy.

Gastrodia can be used for acute of chronic infantile convulsions and seizures. This has to be done under the care of a healthcare professional and very closely followed by changes in sleep patterns, seizure behavior patterns, the frequency of seizures or convulsions, how long the seizures last, and eating patterns of the child.

If the seizures occur less frequently and last for a longer time period, this herb should be discontinued immediately. When the seizures drastically shorten in time and occur slightly more often, the dosage of the herb may need to be adjusted. For extremely difficult diseases, the exact dosage of the herb may be difficult to find.

Epilepsy and the GARD Diet

Complementary Alternative Medicine (CAM) treats several diseases with restricted diets to alter brain chemistry. The G.A.R.D. diet or Glutamate-Aspartate Restricted Diet is an elimination diet developed to treat epilepsy that identifies foods and ingredients to avoid. The items to avoid are gluten, soy, corn, glutamate, MSG, casein, aspartame, and hydrogenated oils.

Gluten is commonly found in wheat and grains. Casein is a protein found in cow milk and dairy products. Soy is a bean. Corn and all corn products like corn syrup and corn starch must be avoided. Many products have corn syrup as a sweetener rather than sugar.

MSG or monosodium glutamate is a common food ingredient in processed foods and Chinese food. Aspartame is a chemical a sugar substitute known as Nutrasweet. This diet restricts glutamate and aspartate. They are non-essential amino acids that stimulate the brain. They are the parent compounds of MSG and aspartame. Aspartame is a well-known neurotoxin and has been connected with brain cancer in Italy.

Glutamate and aspartate may cause seizures and may trigger neurodegenerative diseases in some people. The G.A.R.D. diet removes gluten, dairy, soy and corn which allows the gut to heal. These foods may damage the intestinal villi resulting in celiac disease or food intolerance.

Many patients believe that this diet stops or reduces seizures for people with Mesial Temporal Lobe Epilepsy. It may also protect the brain from diseases which attack or shrink the hippocampus area of the brain. Alzheimer’s patients or undefined seizure patients may benefit from this diet. It must be a permanent eating change to prevent future seizures. Seizures can stop or improve within several weeks.

This diet does not restrict carbohydrate consumption. It allows consumption of high glycemic and high carbohydrates foods. Refrain from all refined foods. Keep this diet organic for best results.
