Melatonin Treats Insomnia and Depression

Complementary
Alternative Medicine (CAM) uses melatonin to improve depression along
with amino acids, vitamins, minerals, and herbs. Melatonin is a hormone
produced in the brain by the pineal gland from the amino acid
tryptophan. It is available as a nutritional supplement. You can also
increase melatonin levels by supplementing the amino acid tryptophan.
Melatonin is stimulated by darkness and suppressed by light and is
affected by the circadian rhythm. It regulates diverse body functions.
Levels of melatonin in the blood are highest prior to bedtime. Low
levels of melatonin are associated with some types of cancer.
Melatonin
will help treat depression that stems from inadequate sleep. When the
sleep cycle is improved, this type of depression patient will often
recover quickly. Anxiety is also a problem when there is sleep
deprivation. Almost every type of brain condition gets worse when there
is insufficient sleep. It is important to ask your doctor about this
problem. Hormone imbalances often cause many brain conditions during
menopause or andropause.
Melatonin
will cross the blood brain barrier and increase brain circulation. It
increases the production of neurotransmitters and balances the brain. It
strengthens the immune system. The enhanced immune system is due to the
improvement in hormone and neurotransmitter regulation.
Complementary Alternative Medicine (CAM) uses melatonin to treat insomnia, jet lag, ischemia,
smoking cessation, sleep disturbances related to depression, depression
caused by sleep deprivation, seasonal affective disorder (SAD), and
anxiety. This hormone may be combined with amino acids to increase its
effectiveness. Nutritional support can include food-based multivitamins,
Vitamin E, Vitamin D, CoQ10, and alpha lipoic acid. Try adding yoga or
mild exercise for producing maximum results from Melatonin.
